How to add an AI chatbot to your WordPress site

A practical walkthrough, from getting your content ready to testing the first answers, so the chatbot actually helps your visitors on day one.

Adding a chatbot to WordPress is the easy part. Making it useful takes a little thought before you install anything. This guide walks through both, in the order we’d do it ourselves.

Before you install: decide what it should know

A chatbot is only as good as what it reads. Before you switch one on, open your site the way a first-time visitor would and ask: if someone had a question right now, where would the answer live?

For most sites, the answers are already there, just spread out:

  • Your pages, such as About, Services, Shipping, Returns and Contact.
  • Your posts, especially how-to articles and announcements.
  • Your products, if you run WooCommerce: prices, stock and descriptions.
  • Documents you send to customers, like a price list or a PDF guide.

If an answer only lives in your head, write it down first. A short FAQ page does more for a chatbot than any setting.

A good test: if a new team member couldn’t answer a question by reading your site, a chatbot can’t either.

Step 1: Create your account

With WP Smart Bot you start in the browser, not in WordPress. Sign up with Google or your email, enter your shop name and website, and the setup shows you the plugin download and a connection string. The Free plan has no time limit and doesn’t ask for a card.

Step 2: Install the plugin

In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, choose the zip file and click Activate. The plugin appears under Settings → WP Smart Bot.

It has exactly one setting, which keeps things simple. Everything else, like the name, colours, welcome message and behaviour, is set in your dashboard.

Step 3: Paste the connection string

Copy the connection string from your setup, paste it into the plugin and click Connect. A connection string works once and expires after 7 days. If yours has expired, create a new one in the dashboard.

Step 4: Let the first sync run

Once connected, the first sync of your pages, posts and products starts by itself. After that, whenever you save a change, it syncs about a minute later. There’s also a Sync now button if you’re in a hurry.

You can add more to its knowledge in the dashboard: documents (PDF, DOCX, TXT or MD), FAQs, and your own instructions, such as “always mention free returns” or “never promise delivery dates”.

Step 5: Test it like a stranger would

This is the step most people skip, and the one that matters most. Open the test chat in your dashboard and ask the questions real visitors ask, in the words they’d use:

  • “do u ship to Lahore”
  • “is the blue one in stock”
  • “how long does a refund take”
  • “can I talk to someone”

Read each answer and ask yourself: is it correct, is it complete, and would I be happy if a customer read it? When an answer is weak, the fix is almost always in your content, not the chatbot. Add the missing detail to the right page, let it sync, and ask again.

Step 6: Decide when your team steps in

An AI assistant shouldn’t be a wall between your visitors and you. Decide upfront:

  • Who answers when someone asks for a person? With WP Smart Bot, “Talk to a human” sends the chat to your team’s inbox, and the AI keeps helping while they wait.
  • What happens at night? When nobody is online, the bot asks for a name, email and WhatsApp number, so you can follow up in the morning.
  • Are there topics the AI shouldn’t handle? Use your instructions to point those questions to your team.

A few things that make a big difference

Write a welcome message that invites real questions. “Hi! How can I help?” is fine. “Looking for the right size? Ask me anything about fit, delivery or returns” is better, because it tells visitors what to ask.

Add suggested questions. Two or three tappable questions help people who don’t know where to start.

Check the unanswered questions every week. Your analytics show the questions the AI couldn’t answer well. Each one is a small gap in your content, and fixing it improves every future chat.

Don’t worry about your theme. The chat runs in its own Shadow DOM and loads after the page is idle, so it won’t break your layout.

The short version

  1. Make sure your answers exist on your site.
  2. Sign up, install the plugin, paste the connection string.
  3. Let it sync, then test it with real questions.
  4. Decide how and when your team takes over.
  5. Keep improving your content from the questions people actually ask.
